31.07.01: Café Charbon, rue Oberkampf / avenue de la République
I probably didn't realize just how far and for how long Mike and his friend Nick had gone travelling (I think Sweden and Hungary were among their visits), so they returned to what must have been four or five messages from me on his voicemail. Since I'd moved in the interim, I convinced them to come up to my neck of the woods for a night out. I don't remember whose suggestion it was to hit the Charbon, but it was probably about time; even Serge had pointed to this place as a gorgeous space, sometimes verging on the annoying in terms of clientele but usually bulging with all types, in the end. Nick, for that matter, was an prolific chatter-upper, which he demonstrated with the (Dutch?) girls sitting next to us. Maybe this evening should have amounted to something more.
