11.03.01: Le Coche, rue de Tolbiac / avenue de Choisy
With plans to meet the clan at the Grand Écran Italie for the much-hyped re-release of 2001 (okay, which I'd never seen in its entirety), I play the "I'm conspicuous" game hanging out for the hour or two before our meeting time on the terrasse just across the street (hey now, I did bring some pedagogical materials). Despite the general characterless blah of Place d'Italie, this place actually has a pleasant country, almost privincial feel, most likely thanks to last couple of trees that line the boulevard goping back toward my neck of the woods. But what to do when the early show is sold out? Buy tickets to the late show and go get dinner. With Chinatown just a few blocks away, should be no problem, but the more members in the group (or maybe the greater the numbers of restaurants?), the lower the level of decisiveness (or maybe the lower the willingness to impose one's will). We do eventually eat, and en route back to the cinema stop off for the requisite coffee. Not sure whether it's a positive or negative thing that a café smack in the middle of Chinatown is still eminently Parisian, complete with generic tan vinyl décor.
