31.01.01: L'Escholier, Place de la Sorbonne
A classic, a classic -- and now with a salsa club in the basement that kept it from going under a few years ago. But worth the trip for a crème with a flourish, classy (legendary?) crockery, and those whacked statues all over the dining room. Which just brought out the usual dilemma: bask in said interior, or camp out by the window? I choose the window - people-watching is almost as good. But this soon bled into a classic all-too-solitary evening. Earlier commments about the non-work atmosphere of some of these cafés nothwithstanding, this is the place where a few months later, basking ingloriously in the orange naugahyde and student-y rumblings, I would finally whip out the laptop a few months later. Not sure what I came to read/write this time, but the place actually did feel somewhat conducive to work. That said, I take off to go see Down By Law.
