16.08.01: La Kaskad', Place Armand Carrel / rue Manin
I'd decided on an ambitious bicycle plan: ride to Ken's home in Ireland via Normandy and the Cherbourg ferry. Although I could probably make do with my clothes in a backpack strapped to the luggage rack, things like a handlebar bag and water bottles (and cages), not to mention at least a few tools and patch kits, were essential. And for some reason I felt I should not buy these things at Go Sport just up the road at République; instead I had to confirm that every neighbourhood bike shop in town was indeed closed for the summer. At least in this case it got me out to the 19e, where I'd never stopped for a coffee before. The Parc des Buttes Chaumont, right across the street from this café, seems to have as many fans as it does detractors (too artificial, too far away, yada yada yada). I tend to agree with Joe, that it's probably the city's most beautiful park -- as he puts it, "craggy cliffs, Greek temple follies, the Sublime, that sort of thing."
