12.05.02: Lou Pascalou, rue des Panoyaux / rue Letalle
I feel a bit silly for not thinking of taking this photo with Karolina still at our table (we had just gotten up), but she'd probably have jumped out of the frame anyway. We'd also just been having a reasonably intense chat about Israel, the French media, and my diasporic angst, so I just snapped to go. This coffee followed a curious but free concert of Vietnamese court music at the Cité de la Musique at La Villette, one of those things I relied on Karolina to invite me to, I suppose. We went on for a walk in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, and out for dinner somehwere -- maybe even chez moi. But now an eveving drink was in order. In the month before Sonia had left town, we had gone out to a couple of the bars in the lower Belleville area, so near yet so far from my place. She had mentioned one, however, tucked away just around the corneer from the boulevard, as a favourite spot. I managed to find it with Karolina, and was especially happy to find they also had my favourite Irish stout on tap. It became a latter-day favourite of mine, and I wound up back here several times with Nathalie, Thomas, and Brian, among others -- I think it's where we came to watch the results of the legislative elections. Plastic lawn chairs did little to detract from the extremely convivial atmosphere of the place.
