25.06.02: Le Rallye, rue Faidherbe / rue Chanzy
Things should only come this full-circle. On my last full afternoon in town, Serge and I meet for a final coffee/shmooze. What made this extra-appropriate was that we went to the café closest to his apartment, right at the corner -- which in 20 years of living there he'd never been to. Hard to say whether we talked about anything unusual, whether there was any extra ceremony to it. Unless it was just my imminent leaving, I think I'd won some admiration, that I he'd come to consider me as having more to offer -- and more capacity to receive -- than he did at first, my meagre literary wits notwithstanding. Between the life-saving computer know-how, the reasonably authentic way in which I carved out my niches in his city, and the subtle iconoclasm of my otherwise very North American mindset, I think I did the job.
